HSUS Joins Consortium to Launch 'Certified Humane' Label
The agricultural revolution will not be televised; it will be live in your grocery store.

No longer the exclusive realm of "granola eaters," organic food as well as other humane and sustainable niche foods have become increasingly mainstream over the past few years. According to the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI), health food is a rapidly expanding market; consumers gobbled up $54 billion worth of its goods in 2002—$5 billion more than the previous year—and it's expected to grow 9% annually in the next three years.

Animal Advocacy Group Filing A Lawsuit Against Egg Retailers

By Gretchen Parker
The Associated Press

February 15, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - An animal advocacy group said it is filing a lawsuit Tuesday claiming that several retailers are peddling eggs labeled "Animal Care Certified," even though the egg industry routinely treats the birds inhumanely.

Compassion Over Killing, a Takoma Park-based animal advocacy group, is suing Giant Food Inc. of Landover, Lehman's Egg Service Inc. of Pennsylvania and Brookville Supermarket of Washington, D.C. The suit, filed in Superior Court in Washington, alleges that the grocery chains are selling eggs stamped with a logo that deceives customers.

Atlanta-based United Egg Producers began the logo program three years ago, in an attempt to set some industry standards for the treatment of hens, said Mitch Head, a spokesman for the trade association. Since then, 80 percent of egg producers have qualified for the program. Without the voluntary certification, the egg industry would revert to having no standards at all, he said Monday.

Standing Up For Farmed Animals
The Satya Interview with Paul Shapiro

This past January, founder and long-time Campaigns Manager of Compassion Over Killing (COK), Paul Shapiro joined the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) staff as the manager of their new Factory Farming Campaign. Kymberlie Adams Matthews recently talked with Shapiro about his new position to end cruelty to animals in agriculture, and the ever-changing face of the animal rights movement.

Tell us about your position at HSUS and some of the campaigns you are working on.
I joined The HSUS staff on January 24, 2005, as the manager of the newly formed Factory Farming Campaign. Our goal is to help reduce the suffering of animals raised for food by working for the phase-out of the most abusive agribusiness practices and promoting vegetarian eating, as well.

FULLERTON, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 09/20/06 -- The number of health-conscious and ethical eaters are growing, which explains the increase in demand for foods that are certified organic and humane. But is the rush on specialty eggs all it's cracked up to be, or is it just hype?

Now Tell Me This Wasn't Kill The Competition And Profit From It?

Egg industry agrees to drop 'animal care certified' logo
Associated Press

The egg industry has dropped its "Animal Care Certified" logos on egg cartons in response to complaints by after animal rights groups and officials from Alaska and 15 other states. Opponents say consumers were being misled. The industry has replaced the logos, which now read, "United Egg Producers Certified." The industry also has agreed to pay 100,000 dollars to states for attorney fees, consumer education and other costs.

Robert Spagnolettiis attorney general for the District of Columbia, which reached the agreement with 16 states and United Egg Producers. He says a certification program must not be promoted in a way that misleads consumers.

The egg group's decision last November to drop the "Animal Care Certified" logo prompted the Federal Trade Commission to stop reviewing a complaint from one animal rights group. The egg group says it did NOT mislead consumers. It has not changed the program for which the label was used.
