Senate Judiciary Committee to Consider Animal-Fighting Bill: Pro-Life Amendment Expected

February 28, 2007

An important measure to protect young girls will likely be considered as an amendment to S.261, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007, this Thursday morning in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

When a similar animal-fighting measure was considered in the House, Pro-life Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Steve King (R-IA) offered language from the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA) as an amendment, arguing that unborn children and minor girls are worthy of the same protections being offered to chickens in the animal-fighting bill.

The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA) will make it a federal offense to transport a minor girl across state lines for the purpose of obtaining an abortion, if this is done to evade a parental notification or parental consent law that is in effect in the girl's home state.

Rep. King argued, "I will not sit here and lend my vote to a piece of policy that elevates chickens above the lives of humanity."

Contact your Senators today to tell them that children should come before chickens when it comes to establishing legal protections!
