The story impressed a national animal-rights group.
A student activist at Pickerington North High School not only had persuaded his teacher and classmates to stop eating meat, he had talked the school board into eliminating meat from cooking classes.
He was scheduled to tell lawmakers that health classes should teach students about the dangers of eating meat and about the harm done to animals on factory farms.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals heard about the story via an e-mail, supposedly from Pickerington North teacher Terry Bauer.
But Bauer, 49, who has taught career and family planning for 15 years in Pickerington, hadn’t written a word of it.
It was all part of a prank pulled by two Illinois teenagers who posted their letter and the enthusiastic response by PETA on a MySpace.com Web log. The only true part of the story is that Bauer, whom the teens used because they were looking for a teacher who uses food in her class, is at Pickerington North.
Teens have long found ways to torment teachers, but the Internet has taken the possibilities to new levels.
